Location:  Dewees Island

Dewees Island

A barrier island community, accessible by private ferry, situated between Isle of Palms and almost 60 miles of protected, uninhabited beach islands.  Dewees offers a pristine, protected environment where you can enjoy unspoiled beaches and experience wildlife in a natural setting.

Dewees residents have formed a pact to tread lightly upon the environment.  Together they plan to preserve what's there for generations to come. It's a community based on respect for it's resources, wildlife, waterways, and land.

Dewees homes are a stark contrast to typical beach development.  It's driven by restoration and preservation.  There are no cars, golf courses or manicured lawns.  And there will never be a stop light or strip mall.  Instead, you'll find acres of flourishing maritime forest and marsh, shores covered with oysters and crabs and inlands teaming with fish, alligators and birds.  The island also claims one of the most pristine, preserved and private beaches in the country.

There will only ever be 150 homesites on the island.  Today there are only about 65 currently built.  Owners are required to disturb only a small footprint to build their houses and to site them so as to take advantage of the natural settings that make Dewees so special.  Attention is given to prevailing winds and winter sunlight.  Beachfront homes are set far back from the shifting sands, protecting them from storm surges.

Members of the community use common boardwalks to get to the beach, protecting the fragile dunes.  Even when the entire island is developed, most of the land will remain in it's pristine, natural state.

Everything and everyone gets to Dewees by boat.  The private ferry connects Dewees to the Isle of Palms.  It's a scenic 20 minute trip that leaves every half hour.  All ferry passengers need prior authorization and an access card.  There are no paved roads on the island and transportation is limited to foot, bicycle or golf cart.
